Buffalo Food Equity Director (BFEN) Director Nnenna Ferguson presented about Food for the Spirit (F4tS) and BFEN’s Farm to School efforts at the NY Health Foundation’s “Transforming Food Systems: From Pilots to Policy” conference on December 5, 2023 in New York City.
The conference panel titled Improving the Cultural Responsiveness of Nutrition Programs, included Nashla Rivas Salas, Senior Director at Correctional Association of New York, Dickran Jebejian, Food Policy Manager at Met Council, and was moderated by Julia McCarthy, Senior Program Officer at NYHealth. The discussion focused on how institutions, such as prisons, schools, and emergency response services are addressing issues of food quality and procurement.
The New York Health Foundation seeks to improve the health of all New Yorkers, especially people of color and others who have been historically marginalized. The foundation has invited F4tS to submit a proposal for Advancing BIPOC Leadership to Support Healthier Culturally Responsive Food Purchasing in Buffalo Schools – a grant which, if approved, is slated to fund the development of a Farm to School work group of the BFEN in spring 2024.
